Boxing in Bergen County News: Who was boxing’s greatest lightweight?
With the unprecendented 8 world titles in multiple weight division’s on Manny Pacquiao’s resume, many are calling him one of the greatest boxer’s pound for pound that ever lived. With Pac-Man’s accomplishments it’s easy to see why that argument could be made, but let’s not forget who almost unanimously holds that distinction amongst boxing old schooler’s. That man is none other than ‘Manos De Pierdas”, Hands of Stone-Roberto Duran. Here was a man that was virtually unbeatable as the world lightweight champion, and successfully made the jump to welterweight and beat the greatest welterweight of the time-Sugar Ray Leonard. Even after the infamous ‘No Mas’ in their rematch, the man went on to win world titles at welterweight, junior middleweight, and middleweight. His fight record at the time of retirment is a staggering 119 pro fights, 103 wins, 70 KO’s.
I came across one of the best highlight videos on Roberto Duran i’ve seen so you can see why he’s is consistently mentioned as one of the greatest boxer’s of all time:
Even with some of today’s great champions in the lower weight divisions, most boxing historians only give Boxing Hall of Famer Shoe-In Pacquiao a ghost of a chance against a prime Roberto Duran.
Check out 4:49 of the highlight vid for some of the sickest jump rope training you’ll ever see.

High Percentage Techniques in MMA
There are certain high percentage techniques in boxing, muay thai, Jiu Jitsu, and wrestling that are tried and true techniques that are battle tested and have a high percentage success rate in either real time sparring or rolling. I have listed what seems to be the general consesus of tried and true techniques that should be drilled over and over again. For those of you that train, i’d like to hear your thoughts on certain techniquies that are tried and true for you and are a reliable part of your arsenal.
Here is a list of techniques that are most people agree are “must master” techniques:
Striking
1. Boxing Jab
2. Boxing Cross
3. Boxing Hook
4. Thai Leg Kick
Grappling
1. RNC (Rear Naked Choke)
2. Armbar
3. Triangle Choke
Takedown/Throws
1. Single Leg
2. Greco Roman Body Lock and Leg Trip
3. Sprawl
This list is far from comprehensive-if anyone has a high percentage success rate using a superman punch or spinning back kick, i’d love to hear about it and add some insight on how you make your favorite techniques work for you.
Mixed Martial Arts in Bergenfield, NJ Bergen County UFC update
Hi All and Happy New Year for all MMA fans in Bergen County, NJ!
In the aftermath of UFC 125, I was wondering what people’s thoughts were on the fights. On paper, the card did not seem to generate a lot of buzz, but the event turned out to be a competitive evening with a lot of breakout performances and emerging future fights for a lot of rising stars.
The Main Event: Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar retains his title in a draw with Gray Maynard. Reminicent of the 1st Pacquiao vs. Marquez fight, Maynard opens strong nearly ending the fight in the 1st round, dropping Edgar three times. Maynard proves he deserves to be the number 1 contender and Edgar proves that he is more than “A fighter that has BJ Penn’s number” and indeed has championship heart by surviving the 1st round scare and battling back into the fight with crisp boxing and takedowns on Maynard whom on paper was said to be the superior wrestler. The fight was competitive with shifts in momentum and a lot of drama-so much so the Dana White has announced an immediate rematch-sidelining Pettis who was originally scheduled to fight the winner of Edgar/Maynard 2.
Another match I was looking forward to was the the return of Takanori Gomi when he met Clay Guida. Gomi, a once dominant force in Shooto and Pride drops his UFC record to 1-2 by lossing via submission to constant spolier Clay Guida. The Guida win was huge and puts him back on the map in terms of contention and puts Gomi’s future in the UFC in doubt. Can Gomi pull a Shogun and come back with strong performances, or will he fall inot the category of Mirko Crocop whom just can’t seem to get back that fire that made him such a feared fighter in Pride. For me, jury is still out on Gomi-but admitedly I am a big Gomi fan. Check out his highlight vid to see why:

Boxing in Bergen County-Pernell Whitaker-greatest defensive boxer of modern times?
a lot of people speak of Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s defensive genuis, but let’s not forget about Pernell Sweet pea Whitaker who in his career rarely lost “rounds” much less fights. In my opinion he did not hit as hard as PBF, BUT interms of defensive wizardry, he was every bit as good-if not better- than Money Mayweather. I’ve posted a highlight video of Sweet Pea, and you be the judge.

To all the FMA enthusiasts out there, today’s Master is a man whose reputation had earned him the awe and respect of the other true master’s in the Filipino Combative Arts. His name is Antonio Illustrisimo or “Tatang” as referred to as a sign of respect from his students and peers and the late Grandmaster of Kali Illustrisimo. Even in his twilight years, the man was a testament to what years of real world training and perfection of his craft can achieve.

Martial Arts in Old Tappan-Featured Technique:The Side Kick-The Underused Kick?-
Hi all friends in the Old Tappan, Norwood, and Oradell area-welcome to my blog post. Today’s post is regarding a very underused kick in Mixed Martial Arts Competition: the Side kick. A lot of folks don’t teach this basic but powerful kick for a lot of reasons. It’s to telegraphed-leaves you off balance for a takedown-not as verastile as the round kick-the same thing can be accoplished with less risk with a push kick. The Chinese full-contact martial art of San Shou relies heavily on the side kick and those who have mastered it’s fundamentals have employed it very successfuly in full contact competition. Before judging a technique as inefficient, give an earnest effort to learn how to the fundamentals of a technique and you’ll add another useful powerful technique to your arsenal. Here is a good video of Cung Le employing the sidekick to good effect in MMA competition:
