Mixed Martial Arts in Bergenfield, NJ Bergen County UFC update
Hi All and Happy New Year for all MMA fans in Bergen County, NJ!
In the aftermath of UFC 125, I was wondering what people’s thoughts were on the fights. On paper, the card did not seem to generate a lot of buzz, but the event turned out to be a competitive evening with a lot of breakout performances and emerging future fights for a lot of rising stars.
The Main Event: Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar retains his title in a draw with Gray Maynard. Reminicent of the 1st Pacquiao vs. Marquez fight, Maynard opens strong nearly ending the fight in the 1st round, dropping Edgar three times. Maynard proves he deserves to be the number 1 contender and Edgar proves that he is more than “A fighter that has BJ Penn’s number” and indeed has championship heart by surviving the 1st round scare and battling back into the fight with crisp boxing and takedowns on Maynard whom on paper was said to be the superior wrestler. The fight was competitive with shifts in momentum and a lot of drama-so much so the Dana White has announced an immediate rematch-sidelining Pettis who was originally scheduled to fight the winner of Edgar/Maynard 2.
Another match I was looking forward to was the the return of Takanori Gomi when he met Clay Guida. Gomi, a once dominant force in Shooto and Pride drops his UFC record to 1-2 by lossing via submission to constant spolier Clay Guida. The Guida win was huge and puts him back on the map in terms of contention and puts Gomi’s future in the UFC in doubt. Can Gomi pull a Shogun and come back with strong performances, or will he fall inot the category of Mirko Crocop whom just can’t seem to get back that fire that made him such a feared fighter in Pride. For me, jury is still out on Gomi-but admitedly I am a big Gomi fan. Check out his highlight vid to see why:

Kickboxing News From Bergenfield, NJ-Van Damme to Fight In K-1?
Rumored Kickboxing News from Bergenfield, NJ:
Jean Claude Van Damme to fight in K-1 kickboxing next year.
When people hear the name Jean Claude Van Damme, most associate it with the legendary movie Bloodsport or him getting knocked out by Chuck Zito. Few—if any—think of him as a martial artist with a black belt in Shotokan karate and a professioal kickboxing record of 20-2.
The former Hollywood star who made a name for himself in a variety of action movies has long since seen the inside of a ring—at least not for competitive reasons.
But recently the 50-year-old former kickboxer and action star announced that in 2011 he will return to the ring to fight a professional fight. He will be going to battle in K-1 against Somluck Kansing, a two-time Olympic gold medal boxer.
What could Jean Claude Van Damme possibly have to prove after all these years out of commission for professionally fighting? A publicity stunt to promote an upcoming movie?
Not according to him. In his fight announcement, he stated, “I fell down rock bottom in my life, and I have that spot following me. The only way to convince people add also forgive myself to all those chilren with their posters for (Kickboxer) and their father telling them ‘he’s (Jean Claude Van Damme) a great guy and you should train like him, and then I f$%* up my life. I want to go back into that ring and to prove to those children that they’ll fight in my heart, and it’ll be a gret fight.”
This announcement brought the former Bloodsport and Kickboxer star to tears. Although it may be a mid-life crisis Jean Claude is going through, I am quite positive that anybody who grew up watching his actions movies will watch when he steps into the K-1 ring.
So what is going on in the universe? Steven Seagal is training UFC fighters and Jean Claude Van Damme is training for a K-1 fight…so what’s next? Chuck Norris agreeing to fight Jackie Chan in a bare knuckle brawl? Ah, one can only dream!
